Why it’s so important to have an extended eye health check

You only get one pair of eyes so it’s important to look after their health if you want them to last you a lifetime. The quality of your vision will impact on almost everything you do on a daily basis so it is important to have your vision checked regularly.

However, having a simple sight test is unlikely to detect deficiencies in your eye health in the early stages of disease.

Did you know that one in two cases of sight loss can be avoided? If you wait until you notice problems with your vision starting to arise before having your eyes checked, then it is likely that significant damage to your vision has already occurred. This damage may well be irreversible and catching eye disease in its early stages is the key to saving sight, so it is important to have your eyes checked, even if you think your vision is perfect.

Fortunately, the technology to detect eye disease, even it its early stages, is available. Advanced eye scanners which support early detection and monitoring of treatment of eye diseases are appearing in optometric practices across the country. These eye scanners create a high definition, three dimensional map of your eye. Unlike conventional colour retinal photographs, these scans go beyond the surface of the retina and look deep into each retinal layer. We call these examinations “extended eye health checks” as they go beyond simply checking your vision.

As well as aiding in the detection of eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, an extended eye health check can also help identify early signs of some general health conditions, for example, diabetes or high blood pressure. So, even if you think your eyesight is great, it’s still a good idea to get your eyes checked.

About the Author

Heidelberg Engineering is manufacturer of the SPECTRALIS. This 4D HD Eye Scanner looks at each layer of the retina to create a high definition, three-dimensional map. There are other systems available but the SPECTRALIS is the only one with active eye tracking, which adds the fourth dimension, allowing it to monitor change over time to 1/1000 of a millimetre. SPECTRALIS sees the smallest changes, and that changes everything. For information on where you can book your 4D HD extended eye health check contact Heidelberg Engineering at:
